Credit Card Questions, Answered

Everything you need to know about credit cards in India — eligibility, fees, rewards, and how DigiKard works.

Choosing a Credit Card

Which credit card should I get in India?

The best card depends on your income, spending habits, and CIBIL score. If you spend heavily on travel, go for Scapia (zero forex, free lounge access) or HDFC Regalia Gold. For cashback on everyday spending, SBI Cashback Card or Axis Ace are top picks. For UPI rewards, Kiwi RuPay Neon is the only card that earns cashback on UPI transactions. DigiKard's free recommendation tool matches you to the right card in 5 minutes.

What is the best credit card for beginners in India?

For beginners with no credit history: the Inori Card (FD-backed, no CIBIL required) or Kiwi RuPay Neon (low fee, easy approval). For salaried beginners earning ₹25,000+/month, IDFC FIRST Wealth is excellent — lifetime free, 4 lounge visits/quarter, and no income minimum on the official site.

What is the best lifetime free credit card in India?

Truly lifetime free cards (no annual fee ever, not a spend-waiver): IDFC FIRST Wealth, Scapia Federal Bank, and Axis Ace. Be careful — many cards advertise 'lifetime free' but charge a fee after Year 1 if you miss a spend target. Always check the full fee schedule before applying.

What is the best credit card for cashback in India?

SBI Cashback Card (5% on online spends, 1% everywhere), Axis Ace (2% flat on all spends via Google Pay), and Amazon Pay ICICI (5% on Amazon for Prime members) are the top three. For UPI cashback specifically, only RuPay credit cards earn rewards on UPI — Kiwi RuPay Neon and Pop UPI Credit Card.

What is the best credit card for international travel from India?

Zero forex markup is the #1 feature for international travel — it saves ₹3,500–₹7,000 per ₹1 lakh spent abroad. Top picks: Scapia (zero forex, free lounge, lifetime free), HDFC Infinia (unlimited Priority Pass worldwide), Axis Magnus (complimentary flight vouchers). Always avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at foreign merchants — always pay in local currency.

Which credit card gives the best airport lounge access in India?

For unlimited domestic lounge access: Scapia, HDFC Infinia, HDFC Diners Black (all have unlimited visits). For quarterly limits: IDFC FIRST Wealth (2+2 domestic+intl per quarter at ₹20K/month spend), HDFC Regalia Gold (3 domestic + 6 intl per year). Note: DragonPass was terminated at all Adani airports (Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow) in May 2025; DreamFolks exited domestic lounges in Sept 2025.

Eligibility & Approval

What CIBIL score do I need to get a credit card?

750+ for premium cards (HDFC Infinia, Axis Magnus). 700–749 for mid-range cards (HDFC Regalia Gold, IDFC FIRST Wealth). 650–699 for entry-level cards (Kiwi RuPay Neon, Axis Ace). Below 650: secured FD-backed cards only (Inori Card, SBI Unnati). No CIBIL history at all: FD-backed cards or add-on cards from a family member.

Can I get a credit card with no income or a low salary?

Yes. FD-backed secured credit cards require no income proof — you deposit ₹10,000–₹25,000 as a fixed deposit and get a card with a matching credit limit. These build your CIBIL score in 6–12 months. Alternatively, if a family member has a card, becoming an add-on cardholder establishes your credit history.

Can I get a credit card without a salary slip?

Yes. Self-employed individuals and freelancers can use ITR (Income Tax Return) filings or bank statements as income proof. FD-backed cards require no income proof at all. Some co-branded cards like the Amazon Pay ICICI Card have relaxed documentation requirements.

How long does credit card approval take in India?

With DigiKard's digital application via video KYC (VKYC), approval and virtual card issuance takes 30 minutes. Traditional bank branch applications take 7–21 days. The physical card is couriered separately in 5–7 business days after approval, but the virtual card number is usable for online purchases immediately.

Why was my credit card application rejected?

Common reasons: CIBIL score below the card's threshold, insufficient income, too many recent credit inquiries (applying to 3+ cards in 90 days), existing loan defaults, or employment type mismatch. Each rejection triggers a hard inquiry that drops your score by 5–10 points. Check your rejection reason letter and wait 3–6 months before reapplying.

How many credit cards can I have at once in India?

There is no legal limit. Most people with good CIBIL scores hold 2–4 cards. Each card application triggers a hard inquiry, so spacing applications 3–6 months apart is recommended. Multiple cards can actually improve your credit utilisation ratio if managed well.

Fees & Charges

What is a credit card annual fee and how can I waive it?

Annual fees range from ₹0 (lifetime free) to ₹10,000+ (super-premium cards). Most mid-range cards waive the fee if you spend above a threshold — e.g., HDFC Regalia Gold waives its ₹2,500 fee if you spend ₹3 lakh/year. Check your card's fee waiver condition in the MITC (Most Important Terms & Conditions) document before applying.

What is a credit card forex markup fee?

A forex markup is a fee charged on international transactions — typically 2–3.5% of the transaction amount. On a ₹1 lakh international spend, that's ₹2,000–₹3,500 in fees. Zero forex markup cards (Scapia, IDFC FIRST Wealth, Niyo Global) waive this entirely. Always check if a card has zero forex before using it abroad.

What happens if I miss my credit card payment due date?

You'll pay a late payment fee (₹500–₹1,200 depending on balance) and interest charges (36–42% per annum on the outstanding amount). Missing a payment also marks your CIBIL record for 7 years. Set up auto-pay for the minimum amount to avoid this — but paying only the minimum incurs full interest on the balance.

What is TCS on international credit card spends?

From May 2023, Tax Collected at Source (TCS) of 20% applies to international credit card spends above ₹7 lakh per financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). This is not an additional cost — it's tax you've already paid, which you claim back in your ITR. It does increase your upfront cash outflow.

Rewards & Benefits

Why don't I earn rewards on UPI payments?

Visa and Mastercard credit cards earn zero cashback/rewards on UPI because the RBI banned MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) on UPI transactions in 2020 — banks recover rewards from MDR, so no MDR means no rewards. Only RuPay credit cards are exempt from this rule. Kiwi RuPay Neon and Pop UPI Credit Card earn cashback on UPI spends.

What is a credit card spend gate for lounge access?

A spend gate is a minimum spending requirement each quarter to unlock lounge visits. For example, HDFC Regalia Gold requires ₹60,000 per quarter to activate its 3 lounge visits. IDFC FIRST Wealth requires ₹20,000/month. Scapia and HDFC Infinia have no spend gate for lounge access.

What is the difference between cashback and reward points?

Cashback is credited directly as a statement credit — straightforward and usable anywhere. Reward points are a currency redeemable only via the bank's catalog, typically for flight miles, vouchers, or merchandise. Points often have expiry dates (1–3 years) and hidden devaluation. Cashback is generally better for most users unless you redeem points specifically for flights.

Credit Score & Building Credit

How do I build a CIBIL score from scratch?

Start with a secured FD-backed credit card or become a family member's add-on cardholder. Use the card for 10–30% of your credit limit each month and pay the full bill on time every month. In 6–12 months you'll have a CIBIL score around 700–750. Never miss a payment — a single missed payment stays on your record for 7 years.

Does applying for a credit card hurt my CIBIL score?

Yes. Each credit card application triggers a hard inquiry that drops your CIBIL score by 5–10 points. The effect is temporary (fades in 3–6 months) but multiple hard inquiries in a short period signal credit hunger and hurt approvals. Apply to one card at a time and space applications 3–6 months apart.

What is a good credit utilisation ratio?

Keep credit utilisation below 30% of your total credit limit across all cards. If your combined limit is ₹1 lakh, keep monthly spend below ₹30,000. High utilisation (above 50%) is the second biggest negative factor after payment history in your CIBIL score calculation.
